The Diplomat
The diplomat Fernando Prieto is the new Secretary General of the Spain-US Council Foundation, replacing Manuel Lejarreta, who was appointed Ambassador to Angola.
Prieto, who entered the diplomatic career in 1992, already held the same post between 2007 and 2008, and his professional career has been mainly related to the United States.
In fact, until last July and since September 2016, he was Political Counsellor at the Spanish Embassy in Washington, where he was previously posted between 2002 and 2007. In addition, between 2007 and 2010, he was deputy director general for North America at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and holds a master’s degree in International Service from the American University in Washington.
Prieto also has experience in Ibero-American affairs, as he has been posted to the Spanish Embassies in Colombia and El Salvador and has worked in the General Secretariat of the Organisation of American States (OAS) and in the Directorate General for Ibero-America of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as the person in charge of Mexico and Cuba.
He has also been posted to the Spanish Embassies in Mozambique and Namibia.
