Acciona Energía has reaffirmed its leadership as the world’s greenest electricity generation company for the seventh consecutive year, according to the ranking prepared annually by the consultancy firm Energy Intelligence, which places Iberdrola in second place and Naturgy in 39th, reports Europa Press.
The report justifies that the group chaired by José Manuel Entrecanales has energy technologies totally free of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, which places it at the top of this table, in which Iberdrola appears in 18th place, with 79% of its capacity free of emissions.
By volume, however, Acciona drops to 16th place, with 9.8 gigawatts installed of renewable energy -although by September it had already increased this to 11.2 GW- while Iberdrola rises to 8th place, with 21.7 GW. In terms of the proportion of renewables, Acciona leads with 92%, and Iberdrola is in 6th place with 45%.
The report highlights the efforts of Iberdrola, headed by Ignacio Sánchez Galán, in having this proportion of renewable assets, bearing in mind that it has a “significant” inheritance of fossil fuels.
The ‘Top 100 Green Utilities’ ranking selects 100 of the largest electricity production companies in the world and classifies them according to their carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and their installed capacity in renewable technologies to determine their degree of involvement in the transition to a low-carbon electricity system.
In addition to Acciona Energía and Iberdrola, the ‘Top 10’ includes three other European companies (Orsted, EDP and Enel, Endesa’s parent company), three Chinese companies (CGN, China Three Gorges and CNNC), one US company (NextEra) and, for the first time, an Indian company (Greenko), all of which have at least 50% of their generation capacity emission-free, although many of them still have a significant fossil legacy.
