The Spanish government has congratulated the new chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Olaf Scholz, with whom it will continue to “work” for a “fairer and more egalitarian” EU.
“A new stage begins for Germany with the investiture today of Olaf Scholz as Chancellor,” declared the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, on his Twitter account after the Lower House of the German Parliament approved Scholz’s appointment this past Wednesday. “Congratulations and many successes for this time, in which Spain and Germany will continue working to make the EU a fairer and more equal place for all its citizens,” he added. Olaf Scholz succeeds Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany between 2005 and 2021.
Sánchez himself celebrated during the closing of the XIV Congress of the PSdG-PSOE, held in Santiago de Compostela, that the Social Democrats have “finally” returned to the German government after 16 years, a change that reflects “what is to come in Europe.” “Today in Germany there has been a political change of enormous importance, reaching an agreement with greens and liberals, the real ones, not the ones we have here in Spain that always look to the right,” he said.
For his part, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, congratulated his new German counterpart, Annalena Baerbock, and affirmed through the same social network that Germany and Spain will continue working together “in and from the European Union for our citizens and to consolidate a sustainable and fair global agenda.”
