The Diplomat
The Spanish Episcopal Conference (CEE) has expressed its surprise that the Government has confirmed the appointment of Isabel Celaá as future ambassador to the Holy See, before the Vatican has given its approval to the request of the Spanish Executive.
EEC sources told Europa Press that they were surprised that the appointment was made public on Tuesday “without having received the relevant approval from the Holy See”.
Government sources confirmed on Tuesday to various media outlets the information advanced by eldiario.es that the Executive has requested the Vatican’s approval for the former Minister of Education and former spokesperson of the Government of Pedro Sánchez to replace the diplomat Carmen de la Peña at the head of the Embassy to the Holy See.
Until the receiving state has communicated its approval of a new ambassador, the appointment of the new ambassador cannot proceed. In the European environment, the time between the request and the response is usually no more than two months, and is sometimes granted more quickly.
