The Government of Spain has congratulated the Republic of Panama on the occasion of the commemoration of the 200th anniversary of its independence, the culmination of the Fiestas Patrias celebrations held throughout the month of November.
“This commemoration provides us with an unbeatable occasion to remember and highlight our shared past, which spans more than 500 years of History, a dense period of complex coexistence strengthened thanks to deep family ties that have allowed us to create the same cultural and linguistic space,” said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement.
According to the Government, Panama’s independence “stands out for its essentially peaceful character and for the firm commitment it made to regional integration and the peaceful solution of regional conflicts, processes in which it has counted on the accompaniment and involvement of Spain ever since”.
Panama is “a fundamental strategic partner and a country of priority attention for Spain”, for which reason the Government wishes to reaffirm “its willingness to work together to satisfy its legitimate aspirations for development and progress, favoring political dialogue, social and economic development, the eradication of poverty and inequalities, as well as the strengthening of the rule of law, good governance and democratic values”.
In addition, “environmental protection, the fight against climate change, digitalization and education are shared goals to create more just and peaceful societies, open to equality and inclusion,” the Executive assured. “All of these are present and future challenges to which Spain and Panama are firmly committed and which challenge us to continue deepening our ties of friendship and collaboration for the benefit of our citizens, with the perspective offered by the two hundred years of Panama’s independence,” he concluded.
