On 1 December at 6 p.m. in the Plaza de la Villa in Madrid, the Jewish Community of Madrid, the Madrid City Council and Centro Sefarad-Israel are joining forces to organise a big party to light the Chanukah candles, an event that will be attended by the Mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida.
The performance of the singer Orovega and the traditional dances of this festival by the Trotandanzas group will add a musical note to a celebration that will also be attended by the president of the Jewish Community of Madrid, Estrella Bengio, and the director general of the Centro Sefarad-Israel, Miguel de Lucas.
Also known as the Feast of Lights, Chanukah commemorates, according to Jewish tradition, the miracle that occurred at the rededication of the Second Temple when a lamp with oil for one day remained lit for eight. Hence, one of the most important moments of the Hanukkah celebration is the lighting of the candles of the nine-branched candelabra called the Hanukkiah. The traditional sweet of this celebration, sufganiots, will be distributed to the public.
