The diplomat Manuel González Garagorri will head the Coordination Unit of the NATO Summit, which will be held in Madrid on 29 and 30 June 2022, according to The Diplomat, according to government sources.
The Unit will report to the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Government, which is headed by Francisco Martín, and has the rank of Sub-Directorate General. Its task will be to coordinate the logistical and operational work necessary for the development of the summit, which will be attended by the heads of state and government of the Atlantic Alliance, including the President of the United States, Joe Biden.
From Moncloa, González Garagorri will have to coordinate the different ministries involved in holding the meeting, fundamentally those of Foreign Affairs, Defence and the Interior, the latter for all security-related issues.
He will have to work closely with the Foreign Ministry, as the department headed by José Manuel Albares will be responsible for providing the services and supplies necessary for the organisation of the summit. Last Tuesday, the Council of Ministers appointed the diplomat Álvaro Iranzo as Ambassador-at-Large for the NATO Summit.
Manuel González Garagorri joined the diplomatic service in 2007 and between 2006 and 2019 he was assigned to the Permanent Representation of Spain to the Atlantic Alliance in Brussels. Since December 2020 he has been Director of Consular Emergency at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and has also been posted in Khartoum and Tel Aviv.
