Next Wednesday, 24 November, Casa Asia in Barcelona (Can Tiana, Carrer de Bolívia, 56) presents at 7 p.m. the round table Afghanistan: History of an Evacuation.
The speed with which the Taliban regained control of the country and in particular of its capital, Kabul, forced the urgent departure of Western troops and Afghan collaborators and their families. The evacuation had to be carried out in record time and in extremely difficult conditions due to the Taliban threat, the prevailing chaos and the constant danger of attacks such as the one that occurred on 27 August, claimed by the Islamic State.
The Ministry of Defence, through the Spanish Institute for Strategic Studies, will provide a contextualisation of the situation and the Spanish presence in Afghanistan over the last two decades. The Operations Command will then explain how the evacuation went from a technical point of view. Likewise, the coordination work of the evacuation operation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation will be analysed, as well as the experience of Ignacio Álvaro, former coordinator of the AECID Technical Cooperation Office in Afghanistan.
José Ignacio Castro Torres, Colonel in the Spanish Army, Researcher at the Spanish Institute for Strategic Studies IEEE, CESEDEN – IEEE, Ministry of Defence; Justo Javier Solano García, Frigate Captain, Operations Command, Ministry of Defence; Fernando Magallanes, diplomat, Consular Emergency Division of the Directorate General for Spaniards Abroad and Consular Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, and Ignacio Álvaro, former coordinator of the AECID Technical Cooperation Office in Afghanistan. There will also be testimonies from Afghan evacuees: Sardar Samim, former Afghan staff of AECID in Afghanistan, and Parwana Paikan, former Afghan staff of AECID in Afghanistan.
