From 19th to 28th November, Madrid’s Teatro de la Zarzuela presents one of the most performed zarzuelas in Spanish theatres, La tabernera del puerto, a seafaring romance in three acts with music by Pablo Sorozábal and libretto by Federico Romero and Guillermo Fernández-Shaw.
Shortly before the outbreak of the Civil War, La tabernera del puerto was staged in Barcelona -on 6 May 1936 to be precise- and then arrived in Madrid, with the war over, on 23 March 1940, for which reason it is considered ‘the last great zarzuela in history’. It is one of the most enduring successes of the Basque composer, Pablo Sorozábal, and of 20th century lyric theatre, and now returns to the Teatro de la Zarzuela stage in a new production by stage director Mario Gas.
