Diplomat Dinesh K. Patnaik has been appointed India’s new ambassador to Spain, replacing Sanjay Varma, who held the post since February 2019, The Diplomat has learnt.

Patnaik has a long career as a diplomat, having served as ambassador to Morocco and Cambodia, as well as being posted in London as India’s High Commissioner to the UK. He was also India’s Deputy Permanent Representative to International Organisations in Vienna.

He was currently Director General of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations and previously held various positions in the Ministry of External Affairs, including Under Secretary in charge of Western European countries and Under Secretary responsible for overseeing India’s relations with African countries.

Patnaik, who has been a diplomat since 1990, will shortly take up his post in Madrid.
