The Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, assured yesterday in the Senate that the Government “continues to bring” to Spain Afghan citizens who collaborated with Spain during its mission in the Central Asian country, although he asked for discretion because “there are many things that cannot be told”.
“We said we were not going to leave anyone behind and we are not leaving anyone behind,” said the minister during the session of control to the Government in response to a question posed by ERC Senator Robert Masih. According to Albares, Spain evacuated in August, after the entry of the Taliban in Kabul, 2. 206 Afghan collaborators and their families, as well as other “particularly vulnerable people”, such as journalists, human rights activists or members of minorities, who were joined by 188 other people evacuated from Pakistan on October 11 and 12.
Albares also assured that the government is still working to repatriate more Afghan collaborators, although he asked for discretion. “They keep coming, we keep bringing them,” he said. “There are many things that cannot be told about how we are doing it, but it is being done,” he added, without further details.
