The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will announce 37 new posts for the diplomatic career next year. The announcement was made last Thursday by the Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, Luis Cuesta, when he reported on the General State Budget before the Foreign Affairs Committee.

The number of places for new diplomats remains at the same levels as in recent years, although it is slightly higher than in the last promotion, number 73, when 34 places were advertised. The result of that promotion was the first equal promotion, with 17 men and 17 women passing the competition.

Cuesta indicated that, with the latest additions to the diplomatic career, the percentage of women is already 29%, as there are 297 women compared to 687 men.

The Undersecretary explained that there are currently 23 Spanish diplomats working for the European External Action Service (SEAEX) and another in the European Commission. Of the former, 13 of them hold posts in EU delegations in different countries.

In his appearance, Cuesta also reported that in 2022, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will have 5,907 civil servants, of whom 1,475 will be assigned to central services and 4,432 abroad. Of the latter, 1,090 are civil servants and 3,342 are public employees.
