This evening at 7pm, Casa América will be screening the documentary Slavery and the Cultural Legacy of Africa in the Caribbean.
The documentary tells the story of the enslavement of more than 12,500,000 Africans who were sent to America between 1492 and 1888. Several countries were involved in the slave trade, including Portugal, Great Britain, France, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark and the United States. It also shows the rich cultural legacy that travelled from Africa and took root in America.
The screening will be followed by a round table discussion with the participation of Miguel Ángel Puig-Samper, Research Professor at the CSIC; Myriam Moïse, Professor at the University of the Antilles (Martinique); Manuel Francisco Fernández, Professor in the Department of Modern History at the University of Seville, and Ángel Quintero Rivera, Professor and Director of Social Research Projects at the Centre for Social Research at the University of Puerto Rico. The event will be moderated by Consuelo Naranjo Orovio, Research Professor at the Instituto de Historia-CSIC and Director of the European project Connected Worlds: The Caribbean, Origin of Modern World.
