The Diplomat
The Government plans to invest 39 million euros in the purchase of the Spanish Embassy in the United Kingdom, according to the item assigned for this purpose in the draft General State Budget for 2022, submitted to the Congress of Deputies.
As The Diplomat has already reported, the Council of Ministers, at its meeting on the 5th, authorised the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to modify its spending limits for future years in order to proceed with the purchase of the building that houses our diplomatic representation in London.
The Embassy, as well as the Ambassador’s residence, is located in a Victorian mansion at 39 Chesham Place, in the Belgravia district, one of the most sought-after areas of the British capital.
The property is currently subject to a lease with the British company Grosvenor Estate, which was signed in June 1928 for a period of 98 years and 9 months, expiring on 25 March 2027.
The government wishes to maintain the embassy on the same site, a building constructed in the 1840-50s and considered to be of architectural value, and has opted to purchase the property as the most suitable alternative.
