The Federation of Jewish Communities of Spain (FCJE) has welcomed the European Commission’s new strategy on combating anti-Semitism and foestering Jewish life and has asked the Government for its involvement and commitment to this project.
The European Commission launched last Tuesday its first strategy against anti-Semitism, which, among other measures, bans the marketing of Nazi memorabilia through the Internet and establishes a network of young ambassadors and a network of places to keep alive the memory of the Holocaust.
“We consider the program presented to be very comprehensive and ambitious and demonstrates the EU’s commitment to securing and guaranteeing Jewish life in Europe”, the Federation said in a statement.
The strategy’s actions address three areas: combating anti-Semitism in all its forms, ensuring Jewish life in Europe, and Holocaust education, research and remembrance. “In Spain, the FCJE as the official entity representing Spanish Judaism, works in these areas and we keep in permanent contact with international organizations”, it continued.
“Safeguarding heritage, protecting the Jewish way of life and spreading Jewish culture are key to building an inclusive and pluralistic Europe”, the FCJE warned. “Anti-Semitism is incompatible with Western values, with human rights and with the spirit of democratic nations”, ot continued. “The FCJE has always worked and will always work for the eradication of anti-Semitism and any form of discrimination”, it concluded.
