Award-winning Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar has released his latest film, Madres paralelas (Parallel Mothers), starring Penélope Cruz, Milena Smit, Israel Elejalde and Aitana Sánchez Gijón, with star appearances by two of the La Mancha-born director’s muses, Julieta Serrano and Rossy de Palma.
In this latest instalment of his work, Pedro Almodóvar tells the story of how two women, Janis and Ana, meet in a hospital room where they are going to give birth. They are both unmarried and accidentally become pregnant. Janis, who is middle-aged, has no regrets and in the hours before the birth is overjoyed; the other, Ana, is a teenager and is frightened, remorseful and traumatised. Janis tries to cheer her up as they sleepwalk down the hospital corridor. The few words they exchange in those hours will create a very close bond between the two, which chance will develop and complicate in a way that will change both of their lives so dramatically.
