The Council of Ministers announced yesterday the appointment of Íñigo de Palacio to the post of Spanish Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, as previously announced by The Diplomat.

Born in Madrid in 1958, with a degree in Law, a certificate from the Hague Academy of International Law and a diploma in International Studies from the Diplomatic School, Madrid), De Palacio has been a member of the Diplomatic Career since 1983.

To date, he has held positions in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Directorate General of International Technical Cooperation, Institute of Ibero-American Cooperation, Directorate General of International Economic Relations) and in the Spanish Embassies in Bolivia and Morocco. He was Consul General of Spain in Porto Alegre, Brazil, and Counselor at the Spanish Mission to the United Nations in Geneva.

After being in charge of the Deputy Directorate General of the United Nations and the Security Council, he was Deputy Permanent Representative of Spain to the United Nations in New York and later Ambassador of Spain to Serbia and Montenegro and Chile.

After requesting leave of absence from the Diplomatic Career, he joined Indra as global director of Institutional Relations from July 2014 to date. He has also been an associate professor of Diplomatic and Consular Law at the Pontificia Universidad de Comillas-ICADE (2003-2004) and is an honorary professor at the Universidad San Ignacio de Loyola in Lima, Peru.

For its part, the Council yesterday appointed Ana Esmeralda Martínez Sáez to the position of Director General of Economic Diplomacy, replacing Luis Óscar Moreno.

With a degree in Economics and Business Studies, Martínez Sáez has been an advisor to the Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism, Reyes Maroto, since 2020.

Previously, the new Director General of Economic Diplomacy held positions at the Ministry of Economy and Finance (2002-2008), at the Economic Office of the President of the Government (2008-2012), at the National Commission for Markets and Competition (2012-2013), at the European Procurement Forum, New York, USA, as president and member of the Council and Treasurer (2013-2018), at the Permanent Mission of Spain to the United Nations, New York, as Economic and Commercial Counselor (2013-2018), and at the Ministry for Ecological Transition (2018-2020).
