The Diplomat
Manuel Hernández Ruigómez will be the new Spanish consul general in Mexico City, after being published this Monday in the Official State Gazette (BOE), the resolution of the call to fill the vacancy..
Hernández Ruigómez has been ambassador to Angola for just over four years, although he will soon be leaving the post, as the government has asked the Angolan authorities for their approval for Manuel Lejarreta to take over the embassy.
The new consul general has extensive experience in Latin America, having served as ambassador to Haiti and consul general in Santo Domingo, as well as having been posted in Managua and San José, Costa Rica.
The Consulate General in Mexico became vacant a few months ago, after Ramón Santos, who was to have held the post, resigned. The then Minister of Foreign Affairs, Arancha González Laya, asked him to remain in her Cabinet, where he was in charge of matters related to Catalonia.
There was speculation in diplomatic circles that Santos could become González Laya’s new chief of staff, but the replacement of González Laya by José Manuel Albares prevented these plans from coming to fruition. According to Voz Populi, Ramón Santos has been chosen by the minister to head the embassy in Venezuela, as Chargé d’Affaires with Cabinet Letters.
Meanwhile, Ana Durán de la Colina will be the new Consul General in Boston, a post left vacant after the resignation of Alberto Navarro, who had returned to the Spanish diplomatic service after serving as head of the EU Delegation in Cuba.
Finally, Adela Díaz Bernárdez will occupy the second post at Spain’s Permanent Representation to NATO.
