The Han-ul Gallery of the Centro Cultural Coreano today opens the exhibition Chaekgeori, Korean Still Life -The Splendour of Books-, which features contemporary works inspired by a branch of traditional Korean Minhwa painting. The exhibition will be on display until 12 November.
Many people think that still lifes are exclusive to Western paintings, but in fact still lifes were very popular during the Joseon dynasty in Korea. Although they developed in many countries, those that focus on books are only found in Korea. Moreover, the genre itself has the word chaek, book, in its name. Chaekgeori refers to many different things related to books, for alongside books were depicted pottery, bronze tools, stationery, everyday items, and some even depicted natural items such as fruits, plants and animals. In short, paintings with books and other items are classified as chaekgeori. To visit the exhibition you need to book a visit here.
