Ireland’s new Ambassador to Spain, Frank Smyth, has taken up his post, replacing Sile Maguire, who has been appointed Ambassador to Nigeria.

Frank Smyth presented his Copies of Style a couple of weeks ago at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, before the Ambassadors’ Introducer, María Sebastián de Erice.

Born in Dublin in 1966, the new ambassador holds a degree in Business and has held various positions in the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs, where he was Director General of Humanitarian Affairs a year ago. Previously, in 2016, he headed Ireland’s campaign to the United Nations Security Council.

Prior to that, Frank Smyth was posted to Ireland’s Permanent Representation to the UN and the Permanent Representation to the European Union. In Brussels, he served first as spokesman and then as ‘antici’ adviser, before being appointed Director General for the EU at the Department of Foreign Affairs.

He has also served as Chief of the Cabinet of the Legal Adviser of the United Nations in New York.
