The Chairman of Iberdrola and President of the Social Council of the University of Salamanca (USAL), Ignacio Sánchez Galán, yesterday highlighted the leadership of the Vice-President of the European Commission, Frans Timmermans, at the head of the European Green Deal.
Timmermans was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Salamanca, in a ceremony held in the auditorium of the Escuelas Mayores, according to the old Latin ceremonial.
Sánchez Galán, who was present at the ceremony, expressed his “deep satisfaction” at the appointment of the Vice-President of the Commission, and stated that it was “a well-deserved recognition of his career in public service, and especially the leadership he is demonstrating with the most transformative project of our continent: the European Green Deal, a programme that places Europe at the forefront of the world in achieving climate objectives and which is transforming the economic and social model of our continent”.
The Chairman of Iberdrola added that “with the European Green Deal, Timmermans is further promoting the work that the Commission has been doing for decades thanks to personalities such as Miguel Arias, and is responding to three of the main concerns of Europeans: accelerating economic recovery, creating quality employment and caring for the environment”.
The future for Spain,” he said, “lies in a solid, united Europe based on a stable and secure framework in which public institutions and companies work side by side. Iberdrola has always been, is and will always be ready to do so”.
At the event, Timmermans said that the European Green Deal is an essential tool “to fight – he said – against climate change, in a fight for which we are running out of time”.
