Some 1,200 Afghans evacuated by the United States from Afghanistan are still at the Rota naval base, awaiting transfer to the US, according to the US Embassy in Madrid.
Since the agreement reached between US President Joe Biden and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to temporarily house up to 4,000 Afghans at Rota and Morón was put into effect, a dozen flights have arrived at the naval base. The Morón base has not been used for this operation.
There have already been five evacuation flights from Rota since 31 August, and the plan is for there to be one a day this week, the embassy said. In principle, no more planes carrying evacuees are expected to arrive in Rota in the near future.
