Strasbourg dismisses two appeals filed against Spain for the police action on 1-O

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in Strasbourg has dismissed two appeals filed against Spain for the actions of the National Police Corps officers during the illegal referendum of 1 October 2017.

Legal sources confirmed to Europa Press that on 27 May the court based in Strasbourg agreed to ignore the petition of the appellants, two individuals from the region of Bages (Barcelona).

The same sources have specified that both appeals were lodged on 4 August 2020 and that they were studied by a single judge who adopted the “final” decision, against which no appeal is possible.

Last May, the Provincial Court of Barcelona refused to investigate the commanders responsible for the National Police in Catalonia for their management during the 1-O by considering that “there is no indication of the existence of a specific instruction to act on 1 October 2017 with forcefulness or to use greater violence than essential”.
