Enagás, Acciona Energía and GNL Quintero have teamed up to develop an electrolysis plant to generate green hydrogen from water (H2O) and renewable electricity in Quintero Bay (Chile), the companies announced.

The investment in the project, which is called ‘Hidrógeno Verde Bahía Quintero’, will amount to some 30 million dollars (around 25.65 million euros).

The aim is to offer a clean and sustainable energy alternative, contributing to the decarbonisation process of the South American country’s energy matrix and the environmental recovery of the municipalities of Puchuncaví and Quintero, in the Valparaíso Region.

The plant, which will be located at the GNL Quintero regasification terminal – of which Enagás is the main shareholder with a 45.4% stake – will have a nominal capacity of 10 megawatts (MW) and will have an initial production of around 500 tonnes per year, which will be gradually increased depending on the demand for green hydrogen generated in the area.
