His Majesty the King plans to travel to Lima to represent Spain at the inauguration of Peru’s new president, Pedro Castillo, which will take place on Wednesday 28th, according to authoritative sources consulted by The Diplomat.
Castillo was proclaimed president on the 20th, more than a month after the second round of the presidential elections, in which he narrowly defeated the candidate Keiko Fujimori.
Don Felipe will be accompanied by the new Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, one of whose decisions on arriving at the Palace of Santa Cruz was to recover the Secretariat of State for Latin America, which had been diluted in the Secretariat of State for Foreign Affairs, with the previous minister, Arancha González Laya.
The King will have the opportunity to talk with the new Peruvian president and will coincide with other Ibero-American dignitaries who will attend the ceremony.
The last time the King attended an inauguration of an Ibero-American president was on 24 May, in Ecuador, with Guillermo Lasso, and he travelled accompanied by the Minister González Laya. He also attended the inauguration of Luis Arce, in Bolivia, in November last year, which, in addition to González Laya, was attended by the then second vice-president of the government, Pablo Iglesias.
