The Council of Ministers agreed on Tuesday to send to the Spanish Parliament the Dual Nationality Agreement with France, which was signed on 15 March in the French town of Montauban by the French President, Emmanuel Macron, and the head of the Spanish Executive, Pedro Sánchez.

The agreement will allow citizens of both countries to have dual nationality, if they meet the necessary requirements and wish to do so. Thanks to this agreement, neither Spaniards nor French nationals will be obliged to renounce their nationality of origin once they acquire the other nationality. There is no provision for privileged access to nationality, nor for a reduction in the number of years to obtain Spanish nationality by residence, which will remain at 10 years for French nationals.

This is the first agreement of this kind signed by Spain with a non-Ibero-American state. Until now, Spain only allowed dual nationality with Ibero-American countries, Andorra, Equatorial Guinea, the Philippines and Portugal. France, on the other hand, authorises dual or triple nationality.
