The Peruvian Embassy in Spain has sent a letter to the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, in which she rejects the statements she made during a debate on 15 July when she affirmed that in the Peruvian elections “44,000 dead people voted”.

The Peruvian ambassador, Claudio de la Puente Ribeyro, signs the document in which he points out that “more than a dozen electoral observation missions”, including those of the European Union and the Organisation of American States, have recognised that the elections in Peru were held “in a free and democratic manner”.

He also recalls that they have congratulated the Peruvian people “for having gone to the polls to express their will in a peaceful and democratic manner”.

“I must reject another part of your intervention, in which you contextualise the mention of Peru by alluding to the characterisation of it as a dictatorship”, the ambassador points out in the letter.

This is in allusion to Díaz Ayuso’s comments in the debate on government control in the Madrid Assembly, where he said: “In Peru they voted for 44,000 dead, in Cuba they continue to crush the people in the streets, in Venezuela the largest exodus in history is taking place, with more than 4 million people. These people then come fleeing the misery that you generate when you govern”.

“My country has demonstrated in its national and international performance an unwavering commitment to the values and principles of democracy and the rule of law, beyond the day-to-day difficulties of political life that all countries face without exception,” said Claudio de la Puente.

Due to all these references, the ambassador asked the president of the Community of Madrid to “think carefully” about the “inaccurate” references she made to Peru, a country that is a friend of Spain.
