Until 18 July, the Teatros del Canal of the Community of Madrid will be presenting La pasión de Yerma, a free version by Lola Blasco based on Yerma, by Federico García Lorca, in its Sala Verde, starring the actress María León.
Traditionally, Yerma has been read with attention to the infertility of its protagonist, to which the symbolic nature of the name given to it by its author undoubtedly contributes. Yerma is, in the collective imagination, “la seca”, as she calls herself, “la marchita”. However, the Andalusian poet makes it clear that, despite the title, the problem lies not with the woman but with her husband. In La pasión de Yerma, the play delves once again into the conflicts already pointed out by Lorca, delving into the tension between desire and morality, motherhood and death, gender and power, but with the freedom offered by a contemporary vision. The dramaturgy has been worked on with the last Lorca in mind, that of La casa de Bernarda Alba, which is why the female characters and their private universe have been given greater prominence.
