To mark the 245th anniversary of US independence, the US Embassy in Madrid and the US Consulate General in Barcelona offered a live streaming air show of 150 light drones flying over the sky for ten minutes last Sunday at the Zarzuela Hippodrome in Madrid.

The drones, the largest show of its kind in Spain to date, drew messages and images highlighting the strong bilateral relationship between Spain and the US and the values shared by both countries since the birth of the United States. The event can be seen on this YouTube link and on the Embassy’s Twitter feed.

“Spain and the United States of America share a long history spanning many centuries, he began by pointing out the message of the ceremony. Two countries that are world leaders with long traditions and memories that unite us, a brotherhood that began in the 18th century and whose path has only just begun. Emotion, history and pride whose symbols propel us into the future.”

“Spain and the USA. -are transatlantic partners with a common global project, together we collaborate to advance and strengthen our bilateral relationship. This union emanates from multiple institutions, beacons that illuminate the path of freedom and democracy. We are allies in NATO, where we work together to protect our shared democratic values. As the world emerges from the pandemic, we are committed to working together in the recovery effort. During this era of transformation, we fight climate change together and shape the future by creating a greener, more sustainable economy. We promote respect for human rights in our countries and around the world. We celebrate Pride month and are allies and supporters of LGTBIQ+ communities. We recognise that human rights oblige us to fight racism and discrimination in all its forms to achieve the equality guaranteed in the founding documents of our two nations.”

“Freedom, equality, tolerance and respect for the environment are the pillars on which both nations will build the future. A future that we want to share and where all are welcome. Together we celebrate 245 years of our proud nationhood, and we share it with our Spanish brothers and sisters. Together we look to the horizon of freedom and democracy. Let us live together, work together, dream together. Happy fourth of July! Happy 4th of July!

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the annual 4th of July celebration has been completely virtual for the second year in a row, following the success of the video mapping of Madrid’s Puerta de Toledo last year. The Embassy hopes that in 2022 it will be possible to hold the traditional face-to-face event again.
