Ritama Muñoz-Rojas’s book Los olvidados del exilio (The Forgotten of Exile), which portrays a little-known reality of the exiles long after the end of the Spanish Civil War, was presented at the Instituto Cervantes at the beginning of last month.
The return to Spain of the intellectuals, writers and politicians who fled in 1939 officially ended the exile of the Civil War. From the 1980s onwards, hundreds of anonymous Spaniards, most of them without education or financial means, were left alone, isolated in the oblivion of their own compatriots, who preferred to build the new democracy without looking to the past. To alleviate the precarious living conditions of those forgotten in exile, in 1984 a small group of people created the Association of Friends of Former Spanish Refugees (AARE) to send them food, clothes and medicine and to offer them a link to their homeland. These are the letters with which the last Spanish exiles wrote back, thanking them for their generosity. They reflect their suffering, their fears and their affection for a land to which very few of them could return. The AARE has donated its archive to the Instituto Cervantes in Toulouse.
