The Ministry of Defense, through the Defense Staff Operations Command, will send today an A-400M aircraft from the 31st Air Force Wing loaded with food and medical supplies to Lebanon, in response to a request for help from the Lebanese authorities to the international community.

“This initiative is a further demonstration of the solidarity of the Spanish people with the Lebanese people and will help ensure the welfare of its population, a key factor for the stability and security of the country”, the Ministry stated in a press release.

Spain has been participating since September 2006 in the United Nations Mission in Lebanon (UNIFIL), whose main objective is to maintain international peace and security by helping the Lebanese government to re-establish its authority in the area.

The Spanish-led Multinational Brigade East, under the command of a Spanish general, is composed of some 3,500 troops of eight different nationalities. Spain contributes with 600 military personnel located at the Miguel de Cervantes base, near the town of Marjayoun, and provides personnel to the mission headquarters in Naqoura.
