Spain and Germany have joined the Paris Peace Forum, an international initiative on global governance issues held annually in the French capital.
The next event of the Forum will take place in Paris from 11 to 13 November and will be attended by several heads of state and senior executives of international organisations, as well as representatives of civil society and the private sector from around the world.
Spain’s candidacy for membership was presented by the Spanish Ambassador to France, José Manuel Albares, at a videoconference meeting of the Forum’s Executive Committee held on Wednesday 23. The German candidacy was presented at the same meeting and both were unanimously accepted by the members of the Forum’s Executive Board.
The President of the Forum, Pascal Lamy, expressed his satisfaction at the new memberships, pointing out that the initiative is enriched by the presence of “two important players on the world stage” and said that they would continue to work towards the incorporation of other states, “with particular attention to those from the southern hemisphere of the world”.
For his part, Ambassador Albares pointed out that Spain “fully shares the objectives of the Paris Peace Forum, as well as its aspirations to reactivate multilateral mechanisms to achieve a more inclusive and fairer global vision of international relations”. “The challenges facing the world today make the vision of the Forum more necessary than ever,” he added.
The Forum was created in 2018 and this year, in its fourth edition, which due to the COVID-19 pandemic will be face-to-face and virtual, will focus on pushing for a more inclusive recovery and providing initiatives to better address global challenges and common goals.
