The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, said yesterday that the presence of Frontex agents on the border with Ceuta is “an option that is on the table”.
Sánchez made this statement during a joint press conference with the President of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen, when asked about Spain’s position on a possible border control by Frontex.
Von der Leyen recalled, for her part, that “Frontex is there to support, and to ensure that there is good management of European borders”. And added. “Yes, it is an option”, thus opening himself up to a possible deployment of Frontex agents in Ceuta and Melilla if Spain requests it.
However, the head of the Executive addressed the people of Ceuta and Melilla to assure them that the presence of the National Police in the area now “guarantees” border control in the autonomous cities “effectively” and “safeguards” the “territorial integrity” of Spain so that “what happened a few weeks ago does not happen”.
