The Diplomat
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Arancha González Laya, and her Belgian counterpart and Deputy Prime Minister, Sophie Wilmès, signed yesterday in Madrid a Memorandum of Understanding for the establishment of consultations and cooperation at the political and administrative level.
The meeting took place in a year in which two important milestones in the bilateral relationship are being celebrated: the centenary of the elevation to the rank of Embassy of the two legations and the trip of the King and Queen of Belgium to Spain in 1921. On the occasion of these events, a joint program of cultural and scientific activities has been drawn up to mark the centenary.
During the meeting, both ministers discussed economic cooperation and showed their interest in continuing to encourage trade relations and investment in sectors such as biotechnology, the agri-food industry, textiles, renewable energy, the hospital sector and the railway sector, among others. Both ministers expressed their desire to see tourism between the two countries recover as soon as possible.
