The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, expressed to the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Garibashvili, Spain’s desire to increase the flow of investment into the country.
Sánchez received the Georgian head of government at La Moncloa, who has travelled to Madrid for the opening of the International Tourism Fair (FITUR) and has also had the opportunity to visit the Congress of Deputies, where he was received by its president, Meritxell Batet.
According to a note distributed by Moncloa, the leaders of Spain and Georgia wanted their meeting to boost economic and trade relations, bearing in mind that the Caucasian country has the potential to become a business hub between Asia and Europe.
According to the note, Sánchez stressed Spain’s interest in increasing direct investment flows to finance projects in Georgia and pointed to the possibility of exploring opportunities for Spanish companies in infrastructure, renewable energies and tourism, sectors in which they are at the forefront.
The head of the Executive conveyed to Garibashvili Spain’s support for the reforms and democratic advances that his country is making, and valued the existing Association Agreement between the EU and Georgia, in force since 2016 and which includes a Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area, and the liberalisation of visas, since 2017.
Spain considers that this is a framework with enormous potential for development, positive for the country, but also for regional stability.
For his part, Garibashvili thanked Spain for its commitment to Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders and for our country’s support in all multilateral institutions, the note underlines.
