To commemorate Nakba Day, Casa Árabe and the Diplomatic Mission of Palestine in Spain are presenting this afternoon at 6 p.m. the conference 73 years of Nakba: what does the future hold?, with Hanan Ashrawi (pictured), political and civil society leader, academic and Palestinian activist. She will talk with José Vericat, Senior Advisor at the European Institute for Peace. The event will be streamed live on Youtube (in English and Spanish) and Facebook Live. Prior registration is required to attend in person. Registration at this link. In English, with simultaneous interpretation into Spanish.
Nakba, Arabic for “catastrophe” or “disaster”, is the fact that before and during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war more than 700,000 Palestinians had to flee their land and hundreds of towns and villages were destroyed or forcibly depopulated. Since then, many UN Resolutions have been ignored by Israel, which has carried out illegal settlement building and deepened its occupation of Palestinian territories. Against all odds, the Palestinian people have refused to forget and renounce the right of return and have continued to resist over the decades. In this lecture, Hanan Ashrawi will talk about the profound legacy of the Nakba, but also about Palestinian current affairs in light of the most recent developments. She will also address the prospects for future elections and reforms in Palestine and the role of the European Union. The event will be presented by Musa Amer Odeh, Palestinian Ambassador to Spain, and Pedro Martínez-Avial, Director General of Casa Árabe.
