Iranian Foreign Minister Mohamad Yavad Zarif arrived in Madrid yesterday, where he met with his Spanish counterpart, Arancha González Laya, as part of a tour of several European capitals.
Zarif, who has just made a visit to Syria, and has had numerous contacts in recent weeks with Arab countries, is trying to gather support from EU states for the reactivation of the 2015 nuclear agreement, following the arrival of Joe Biden as President of the United States.
However, Biden has so far been sceptical about whether Iran has any real interest in reviving the agreement.
At the talks in Vienna, Iran is seeking the lifting of economic sanctions and the unfreezing of billions of dollars, measures that were imposed by Washington during the Donald Trump administration, which accused Tehran of repeatedly violating the agreement.
In addition to the issue of the nuclear deal, Zarif and González-Laya discussed the development of bilateral relations and joint cooperation on issues of mutual interest, according to Iran’s IRNA news agency.
