Yesterday, the Centro Sefarad-Israel presented the book El sueño de Bolívar y la manipulación bolivariana (Bolivar’s dream and Bolivarian manipulation), by Carlos Malamud. Throughout its pages, the author studies Bolívar’s thought, especially his idea of American unity, and how the figure of America’s liberator has been falsified throughout the 20th century by political interests. Above all, in the case of the so-called Bolivarian revolution, which has invested Bolívar with a series of extemporaneous political and ideological attributes in order to turn him into the ultimate prophet of Latin American integration, 21st century socialism and the second independence against the United States.
Do Simón Bolívar and Bolivarism have anything to do with the Bolivarian revolution and related movements in South America today? Is it possible to conclude, as many academics and politicians such as Hugo Chávez, Evo Morales, Rafael Correa and their many followers or allies throughout the region and beyond have repeatedly done, that Bolívar was the great precursor of Latin American integration?
