The Diplomat
The presidents of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, and Guatemala, Alejandro Giammattei, will officially visit Spain this coming Monday on the occasion of their participation in the Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government, which will take place in Andorra on April 20 and 21.
Both Luis Abinader and Alejandro Giammattei will be received this Monday in Madrid by the King and by the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, and will be entertained the same day by Philip VI with a joint dinner in their honor at the Royal Palace of El Pardo. Madrid. These two countries, plus Andorra, make up the current troika of the Ibero-American Summit due to their status as hosts of the previous one (Guatemala, in 2018), the current one (Andorra) and the next edition of the Summit (Dominican Republic in 2022). For this reason, the leaders of these three countries, in addition to those of Spain and Portugal, will be the only ones to participate in person at the Summit, which will be held under a hybrid face-to-face and telematic format.
As for the Dominican leader, Luis Abinader will deploy in Madrid an intense institutional agenda and will hold meetings with businessmen and the Dominican community in Spain. Likewise, the signing of a memorandum of understanding for bilateral consultations between the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Dominican Ministry of Foreign Affairs is planned, which will allow institutionalizing bilateral political contacts and systematize the follow-up of matters of common interest.
Throughout the visit, the main dossiers of the bilateral agenda will be addressed, as well as the regional and international agenda, with special attention to the Ibero-American Summit in Andorra. The Dominican Republic is the Pro-Tempore Secretariat of the Ibero-American Conference for the period 2021-2022, and will host the next Ibero-American Summit in 2022, which will focus on sustainable economic recovery.
For his part, the President of Guatemala, Alejandro Giammattei, will hold a series of official, institutional and business meetings and will also attend the signing of a memorandum of understanding for bilateral consultations between the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Guatemalan Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the aim of institutionalizing and systematizing bilateral political contacts and the monitoring of matters of common interest.
Among the topics to be addressed during the visit will be the main issues of bilateral, regional and international interest, such as the Ibero-American Summit, in which President Giammattei participates in person as Guatemala hosted the last Summit held in La Antigua, in November 2018, and because it has held the Pro-Tempore Secretariat of the Ibero-American Conference.
