Author: Isidre Ambrós.
To discover China, beyond the neon lights, and the Chinese, with their setbacks and joys, with their struggles to make ends meet and their humble aspirations… To get to know it beyond the propaganda. This is the proposal made by journalist Isidre Ambrós in the book La cara oculta de China: una década en el corazón del gigante asiático (The hidden face of China: a decade in the heart of the Asian giant), which covers the evolution of the Asian giant and its inhabitants since the former “empire of the centre” appeared on the international scene, with the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, until its consolidation as a world power and the impact of the SARS and Covid-19 epidemics. The author makes us accomplices of his experiences of a decade in this millenary country, as attractive as it is unknown, a few years in which he has devoted himself to travelling around it and capturing it through his chronicles as a correspondent for La Vanguardia. In them, he invites us to get to know the daily life of men and women who, with their silent sacrifice, have been decisive in China’s aspirations to unseat the United States from the world’s leadership. Ambrós has managed to penetrate a society that is very reserved towards foreigners in order to narrate the experiences of real people and the workings of a complex society, tightly controlled by the Communist Party.
