The Council of Ministers of Agriculture and Fisheries of the EU closed yesterday an agreement to extend until July the fishing rights of the Community fleet in the reserves it shares with the United Kingdom, pending the conclusion of negotiations with London on fishing quotas for 2021.
“It is a very positive agreement that provides continuity to the activity of the Spanish fleet”, said the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, in relation to the agreement, which allows to extend until July 31 the Total Allowable Catches (TAC) and quotas of fisheries shared with the United Kingdom.
With this agreement, which had the unanimous support of the eight countries affected by the fisheries negotiations with London, the operability of the Spanish fishing activity is guaranteed without compromising the ongoing talks between the European Commission and the United Kingdom and without jeopardizing the unity of the Member States to the possibility of reaching an agreement with the British Government next April.
