The Ambassador of Italy, Riccardo Guariglia, made an institutional visit last week to the Canary Island of Tenerife, where approximately 17,000 AIRE (Anagrafe degli italiani residenti all’estero) nationals live and where the Farnesina has recently activated a new Consular Counter, in the municipality of Arona.

Accompanied by the Honorary Consul, Silvio Pelizzolo, the Ambassador met with Pedro Manuel Martín Domínguez, President of the Cabildo Insular de Tenerife, the island’s governing body, with whom he discussed the issues of the large and varied Italian community and ways of strengthening cooperation in both the economic and cultural spheres. Special emphasis was placed on migration issues, given that the island receives a large number of migrants from the African coasts, and on the possibilities for synergies between the two countries in this area.

Riccardo Guariglia then visited the offices of the Ventanilla Consular de Arona, which has been active since last December, and those of the consular agency that is being set up and will subsequently take over from the Ventanilla, with more functions and services available to the community.

Finally, accompanied by the director of the Instituto Cultural Italiano in Madrid, Marialuisa Pappalardo, the ambassador attended the performance of Il matrimonio segreto by Domenico Cimarosa, a co-production of the Canary Islands Auditorium, the Teatro Regio in Parma and the Teatro Massimo in Palermo, at the Tenerife Auditorium.
