The Spanish government yesterday expressed its condolences to the government and people of Côte d’Ivoire on the death of Prime Minister and Defence Minister Hamed Bakayoko, while praising his work during his time in office.

A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs described Bakayoko as “the driving force behind the political dialogue that laid the foundations for the peaceful and transparent conduct of the recent legislative elections” and said that “he contributed to the stability of the country from key government responsibilities, while maintaining a close relationship with his fellow citizens and especially with the Ivorian youth”.

“In these painful moments, the Spanish government stands by the Ivory Coast, which is a priority partner for Spain,” the statement concludes.

Bakayoko died last Wednesday in Germany, where he was being treated for cancer.

To fill his vacancy on an interim basis, Ivorian President Alassane Outtara has appointed Patrick Achi, who assumed the duties of prime minister, and Téné Birahima Ouattara to the defence portfolio.
