The Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) yesterday sent a START emergency medical team to Bata, the economic capital of Equatorial Guinea, to help the victims of last Sunday’s explosions in the Mondong Nkuantoma barracks, which caused a hundred deaths. This is the second mission of the Spanish Technical Team for Emergency Aid and Response (START, known as the “red vests”) after the one it carried out in April 2019 in Mozambique to help the victims of cyclone Idai.
The medical team, composed of health personnel from the public health system and experts in humanitarian action, left yesterday evening from Adolfo Suarez/Barajas Airport in the presence of the Secretary of State for International Cooperation, Angeles Moreno, and the director of the AECID, Magdy Martinez.
In addition, yesterday arrived in Bata the humanitarian aid sent last Tuesday by the Spanish Cooperation, consisting of more than 2,600 kilos of surgical material, medicines and sanitary material for an approximate value of 60,000 euros. The humanitarian operation is part of the European initiative Team Europe, which has co-financed the transport of the humanitarian cargo to its destination.
