The “Women Avenir 2021 Award” was presented yesterday, via videoconference, to Maria da Penha, for having promoted Brazil’s Federal Law 11340 -also known as Lei Maria da Penha-, with the specific objective of reducing domestic violence in Brazil; and to the Costa Rican Elizabeth Odio Benito, president of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, for her active and valuable work in the eradication of violence against women.

The winners were presented by the Consul General of France, Marie-Christine Lang, and the Ambassador of Costa Rica, Ana Helena Chacón.

The award, granted by the Spanish-French Association Mujeres Avenir, was presented by the State Secretary for Foreign Affairs and Ibero-America and the Caribbean, Cristina Gallach, at the end of the “IV International Conference on Women and Diplomacy in Madrid”, held in collaboration with the magazine “Diplomacia Siglo XXI” and the Diplomatic School, in whose Aula Magna the event took place.

The Conference focused on the theme “Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions”, which coincides with goal number 16 of the United Nations 2030 Agenda, and the ambassadors of Morocco, Karima Benyaich; of Moldova, Violeta Agrici; of Guatemala, Mónica Bolaños Pérez; and of South Africa, Thenjiwe Ethel Mtintso; and the ambassador on Special Mission for Gender Equality in Foreign Policy of the Government of Spain, Clara Cabrera Brasero, took part in the debate.
