Last February 24th, the Ambassador of Romania, Gabriela Dancau, inaugurated the Honorary Consulate of Romania in Malaga, during a symbolic act hosted by the Delegation of the Government of Andalusia in the Province of Malaga.

The official opening of this Honorary Consulate is part of a broad strategy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bucharest to expand the Romanian institutional presence in more important cities in Spain. Malaga is a dynamic city, which represents for Romania a model of development as a cultural, innovative and intelligent city. The decision of the Romanian authorities represents an opportunity to diversify and deepen relations between Romania and the Province of Malaga, which has around 25,000 Romanian residents, the second largest foreign community after the British.

The Honorary Consulate of Romania in Malaga opens up new possibilities for cooperation at regional and local level and responds both to a real interest as a tourist destination on the part of the Romanian public, as well as to a need to facilitate access to Romanian culture and traditions and to make the business community in Malaga aware of the opportunities offered by the Romanian economy today. The Honorary Consul, José Luis Ramos, is an excellent connoisseur of Romania and has an important experience in the field of Spanish administration as deputy mayor in the City Council of Malaga for trade, industry, employment and public roads, as president of AHEM, the association of hoteliers in the province of Malaga, as director of major multinational companies and as a businessman.

This event is also part of the celebrations of 140 years since the establishment of modern diplomatic relations between Romania and Spain. One of the most important links between Romania and Spain is the Romanian community living in Spain, the largest community of foreigners in Spain, about one million people, which has an important contribution in the development of the Spanish economy and even in the decision of Spanish companies to invest in Romania.
