The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Arancha González Laya, has appointed Alberto Antón Cortés as the new ambassador director of the Diplomatic School, according to authoritative sources informed The Diplomat.
Alberto Antón will replace Fernando Fernández-Arias, who on January 19 was appointed director general of the United Nations, International Organizations and Human Rights.
The new director of the Diplomatic School was currently in charge of the International Civil Servants Unit at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a post from which he tries to promote the presence of Spaniards at different levels in multilateral organizations.
A diplomat since 1985, Alberto Antón has an extensive professional career in which he has been, among other things, ambassador to Kazakhstan, ambassador in Special Mission for Digital Diplomacy and “number two” in the Permanent Representation of Spain to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg.
He has also been Consul General in Lyon and Deputy Director General for Consular Legal Affairs, and has held the second position at the Embassy in Tunis, as well as having been posted in Rabat and at the Permanent Representation of Spain to the EU.
