Carlos Midence, Ambassador of Nicaragua, together with the Frente Antiimperialista Internacionalista and the Centro Club Madrileño Raheem, paid tribute last Monday to the Nicaraguan general and leader Augusto C. Sandino, on the 87th anniversary of his death.

The event, in which sanitary measures were respected at all times, began with the words of the academic and professor of the Complutense University of Madrid, Dr. Ángeles Díez Rodríguez, who reflected on the figure and struggle of Sandino.

Likewise, the Nicaraguan ambassador, Carlos Midence, offered greetings on behalf of his government and outlined the correspondences between the ideas and projects articulated by Sandino in his writings and the Sandinista government model, presided over by Daniel Ortega and the vice-president, Rosario Murillo.

This was followed by the presentation of the film Sandino, directed by the Chilean filmmaker Miguel Littín, starring Joaquim de Almeida and Victoria Abril. Ambassador Midence pointed out that the film reclaims for popular memory the figure and deed of a man who, like few others, symbolises the yearning for freedom and independence of “Nuestramérica”.

Among those present were the ambassadors of Guatemala and Greece, the Chargé d’Affaires ad hoc of Venezuela and diplomats from Cuba, as well as intellectuals, artists and members of the Internationalist Anti-Imperialist Front, who demonstrated their identification with the struggle of Augusto C. Sandino, fully agreeing that, “in today’s Nicaragua, the dignified legacy of our brave and unconquered General is crystallised through the restitution of rights of Nicaraguan families”.
