The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, yesterday congratulated the President of Costa Rica, Carlos Alvarado, on the second anniversary of his decarbonisation plan, “an ambitious, pioneering and inspiring plan and one that is going to help us achieve a greener, more sustainable and more supportive planet”.
“The moment is critical and the science is conclusive” and, therefore, “we need more inspiring examples like Costa Rica’s in the face of this climate emergency that the planet is suffering and which obliges us to fulfil, with determination, the commitments made internationally in the Paris Agreement and in the 2030 Agenda”, declared the chief executive in reference to the Alvarado government’s National Decarbonisation Plan, which aims to achieve a decarbonised economy by 2050 and of which 25% of the objectives of the initial stage (2018-2022) have already been met, according to official data.
“2020 will be remembered as the year of the pandemic, the year of COVID-19, a pandemic that made us very aware of our own vulnerability, and 2021 has to be the year of recovery and resilience, the year in which we set the course for a just ecological transition and a much more sustainable development than the current one”, Pedro Sánchez continued through a video message.
“Spain is clear: we prioritise green, blue, inclusive and fair economic recovery, and our commitment to sustainability is firm, and our public policies put people at the centre, on a domestic scale but also on a global scale”, said Sánchez. “We want to continue to participate actively in this task, together with sister countries such as Costa Rica, in a multilateral response that is up to the task”, he added.
According to the head of the Executive, Spain has joined “the list of countries committed to climate neutrality by 2050”. “We have important dates ahead of us, such as COP15 in Kunming (China) for the preservation of biodiversity and COP26 in Glasgow (United Kingdom) to raise our climate ambition”, he added. “We will be by Costa Rica’s side at these events, facing the challenges of our time together”, he concluded.
