The president of the Popular Party, Pablo Casado, yesterday described as a “great opportunity” the possibility that the United States command for Africa (Africom) would move to Spain and, specifically, to the naval base of Rota, in Cadiz, because he considers that it would create jobs and strengthen the strategic role of our country and its national security, reports Europa Press.
Africom is located in the German city of Stuttgart and during Donald Trump’s term of office its transfer to another location was considered. Among the options, the option of the Rota base, where the United States already has troops, was being considered.
However, that plan is now being reviewed by the new Administration of Joe Biden, as explained to ABC the deputy commander of the U.S. military command for Africa, Kirk Smith, who recently visited Spain.
The Government has always been very cautious about this matter and has assured that it has never had an official communication from the United States about its will to move the Africom from Stuttgart, although both the Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Arancha González Laya, have guaranteed Spain’s commitment to security and defense.
